About this wiki

O ôs

Kaaps is the language of millions of people across the Western Cape and beyond, spoken at home, on the street, in music, poetry and theatre. For a long time it was treated as "slang" or as a lesser form of Afrikaans. It is a language in its own right, with its own history, vocabulary and ways of speaking.

The Kaaps Wiki is an initiative of the University of the Western Cape (UWC). It brings together research, community knowledge and everyday language in one open place, so that Kaaps can be documented, taught and celebrated by the people who speak it.

On this wiki you can look up words and expressions, learn how Kaaps grammar and spelling work, read about the language's history, and add what you know.
